So, who are we?

Nowhere Desk began as an idea in 2021, inspired by the belief that rural areas can be vibrant hubs of innovation, community, and sustainable living. We’re mother and son, Maria and William, each bringing a unique perspective.  Maria, a freelance translator and English teacher, has been a remote worker since the late 1990s. William, an engineer working at the time inside the most advanced chip manufacturing facilities in the world (mainly in Taiwan and South Korea), witnessed firsthand how cities such as Taipei and Seoul stand at the brink of a housing and pollution crisis. Our combined vision is to challenge and redefine the narrative surrounding rural spaces by creating a place that promotes sustainability, inclusivity, and community.

In the wake of a lot of thought about acquiring a land in the heart of rural Northern Portugal (Minho region) the idea of bringing people together in such outstanding and underrated places came to life. After four years of struggling with building costs and permits, high startup capital and several winds of change, we are finally starting to host our first events in 2025!

Maria do CĂ©u

The Linguist

With almost three decades as a remote worker, my journey has been one of continuous learning and adaptation. I began as a language teacher, but my path soon took an unexpected turn into translation—a field where I could fully explore my passion for language and technology. Along the way, I embraced the shift to digital tools, earning a Master’s and a PhD in translation studies, which allowed me to develop new skills and stay at the forefront of my field.
Now, I’m embarking on a rural coworking and coliving project with my son in Portugal’s scenic Minho region. This project reflects my commitment to sustainable living and my desire to build a community where remote workers can reconnect with nature and each other. By creating a space that blends professional growth with an eco-conscious lifestyle, we aim to inspire others to find balance and fulfilment in a simpler, more connected way of life.

I love walking long distances and plunging into freezing water.

William

The Engineer

With over 7 years of international experience across semiconductor factories, aircraft assembly lines, and IT systems, William has witnessed firsthand how collective intelligence enables extraordinary achievements. His passion lies at the intersection of technology and nature, cutting-edge industry and rural landscapes, creating solutions that harmonize innovation with the environment. William is driven to bridge these worlds, fostering growth that respects both advanced technology and natural ecosystems.

William loves scuba-diving, kitesurfing and planting stuff.
